The connection between environmental factors and childhood cancer has long been a subject of research, but a new study from Yale University has uncovered a shocking revelation: air pollution and light exposure at night may be directly linked to the rise in thyroid cancer cases among children and adolescents. PM2.5 and Its Impact on Thyroid Cancer

In a groundbreaking study conducted in California, researchers found that children exposed to higher levels of PM2.5 in their early life—especially around the time of birth—had a significantly higher risk of developing papillary thyroid cancer. For every increase of 10 micrograms of PM2.5 per cubic meter, the chances of developing thyroid cancer increased by 7% overall, and by 13% among Hispanic children. These figures are more than just numbers—they represent real children growing up in neighborhoods where air quality is often compromised.
The Danger Lurking in Our Nighttime Lights
As if the dangers of air pollution weren’t enough, another insidious risk is lurking in the dark: light pollution. Light pollution refers to the excessive or misdirected artificial light that disrupts the natural nighttime environment. Think street lamps, billboards, or even floodlit sports arenas—all of which emit light into the sky during the night, keeping it brighter than it should be.
In the same study, researchers found a startling link between high levels of artificial light exposure at night and an increased risk of thyroid cancer in children. Children who were exposed to the brightest lights had a 25% higher chance of developing thyroid cancer compared to those with the least exposure.
But why does light matter? The key lies in a hormone called melatonin. Melatonin is produced by the body during the night and is known for its protective anti-carcinogenic properties. When we are exposed to light at night, our body’s production of melatonin decreases, disrupting our natural sleep cycle and throwing off our circadian rhythm. This disturbance can impact the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid (HPT) axis, the system that controls thyroid hormone regulation. Why Are Children More Vulnerable To Air & Light Pollution?
While adults can also suffer from the effects of air pollution and light exposure, children are particularly vulnerable. Their bodies are still developing, and they are often exposed to environmental risks for longer periods of time. Moreover, the impact of these pollutants on the developing thyroid—especially during critical periods like pregnancy and the first few months of life—is more pronounced.
This vulnerability is compounded by socioeconomic factors. Children in poorer urban areas are often exposed to higher levels of both PM2.5 and light pollution. These areas tend to be located near busy roads, industrial zones, and sources of artificial light, making children in these neighborhoods more susceptible to environmental hazards.
What Needs to Change: Protecting Our Children

- Environmental Justice: Communities of color, particularly those living in poverty, are often disproportionately affected by environmental hazards. The higher rates of pollution and light exposure in these neighborhoods are a result of systemic inequalities in housing and urban planning. Tackling these issues is not just about health—it’s a matter of social and environmental justice.
- Better Health Screening: It is also crucial for pediatricians and healthcare providers to ask about environmental factors during prenatal and postnatal visits. Birth weight and vaccination history are important, but understanding the environmental conditions a child was exposed to is just as vital.
While this study was conducted in California, the findings are highly relevant to countries like India, where urbanization is rapidly increasing. Cities like Delhi, Kanpur, Mumbai and Varanasi often record dangerously high levels of PM2.5, far exceeding the safe limits recommended by the WHO. At the same time, artificial lighting continues to expand across the country—creating more disruption to circadian rhythms and contributing to health issues.
